Program description

This three-course Certificate of Completion program is designed to provide you with a combination of business intelligence knowledge, skills and ability that employers will value. Using the case study model, you will work in a multi-disciplinary team to enhance your knowledge and learn industry-accepted informatics tools and strategies for analyzing a variety of data sets.

The Certificate of Completion in Business Intelligence and Data Analytics is the first program of its kind being offered by the University of Victoria. Delivered via a unique blended learning model, you will spend the first weekend of each course on campus in the classroom and then have the flexibility of four weeks of online studies. You will complete the entire program within six months.

Program outcomes

Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:

  1. identify and understand the benefits of employing business intelligence and data analytics tools;
  2. work collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary project team to identify and solve business problems;
  3. identify and evaluate data sources for use in business intelligence and data analytics projects;
  4. plan, design and build business intelligence and data analytics solutions using small and large data sets;
  5. work with a simplified data model approach in support of business intelligence and data analytics projects; and
  6. demonstrate and apply an understanding of the industry standard informatics tool R by:
    1. scraping, extracting and preparing data from disparate data sources;
    2. exploring and visualizing small and medium data sets; and
    3. building business intelligence and data analytics solutions.

Letter of Intent: Submit a brief letter, no longer than two or three paragraphs, of how you anticipate this program serving you.

Transcripts: You'll need ONE of the following to be eligible for admission. Photocopies will suffice:

  • a university degree (or relevant professional qualifications) and three years of work experience; OR
  • a college diploma with five years of work experience; OR
  • any combination of equivalent education and work experience

English language requirement for international students

International students must meet the requirements above.

In addition, applicants whose first language is not English must submit proof of English proficiency (TOEFL 90 on the online test or 575 on the paper-based test, with no section less than 20 or IELTS 6.5, with no individual component less than 6.0). You are not required to provide proof of language proficiency if you have studied full time for at least four years within Canada at the high school and/or post-secondary level, and all of your instruction has been in English.

Policies

Refunds and withdrawals - A refund may be provided before noon on May 15, 2018 if you have notified the program staff by email: bida@uvic.ca indicating your wish to withdraw from the program. The amount of your refund will be dependent upon deposits and payments made as of May 15, 2018.
