Program description

This three-course program is designed to provide you with a combination of business intelligence knowledge, skills and ability that employers will value. Using the case study model, you will enhance your current knowledge and learn how to use industry-accepted informatics tools and apply effective strategies for analyzing a variety of data sets.

The Business Intelligence and Data Analytics Certificate is the first program of its kind being offered by the University of Victoria. Delivered via a unique blended learning model, you will spend the first weekend of each course on campus in the classroom and then have the flexibility of four weeks of online studies. You will complete the entire program within six months.

Program outcomes

Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:

  1. identify and understand the benefits of employing business intelligence and data analytics tools;
  2. identify and evaluate data sources for use in business intelligence and data analytics projects;
  3. plan, design and build business intelligence and data analytics solutions using scalable data sets;
  4. work with a simplified data model approach as part of a metadata strategy in support of business intelligence and data analytics projects; and
  5. demonstrate and apply an understanding of the industry standard informatics tool R by:
    1. wrangling, exporing and preparing data from disparate data sources, including the handling of missing data;
    2. modeling and visualizing data sets using an array of maching learning and graphic tools; and
    3. building business intelligence and data analytics solutions.

Though not required, prior programming/coding experience, prior experience with R, and/or prior experience in building complex spreadsheets or writing VBA code is strongly recommended as an asset for success in this course. You having this prior experience will ensure you are not committing additional time to becoming comfortable with the above through the duration of the course.

Letter of Intent: Submit a brief letter, no longer than two or three paragraphs, of how you anticipate this program serving you.

Transcripts: You'll need ONE of the following to be eligible for admission. Photocopies will suffice:

  • a university degree (or relevant professional qualifications) and three years of work experience; OR
  • a college diploma with five years of work experience; OR
  • any combination of equivalent education and work experience

English language requirement for international students

International students must meet the requirements above.

In addition, applicants whose first language is not English must submit proof of English proficiency (TOEFL 90 on the online test or 575 on the paper-based test, with no section less than 20 or IELTS 6.5, with no individual component less than 6.0). You are not required to provide proof of language proficiency if you have studied full time for at least four years within Canada at the high school and/or post-secondary level, and all of your instruction has been in English.


Refunds and withdrawals - A refund may be provided  if you have notified the program staff by email: indicating your wish to withdraw from the program. The amount of your refund will be dependent upon deposits and payments made.
