Course description

Explores the ethical and security considerations in data management, with a special emphasis on Indigenous Data Sovereignty. Students will learn about the principles of data ethics, privacy, and security, and how these apply to the collection, storage, and use of data. The course will delve into the unique challenges and opportunities related to Indigenous data, including the importance of respecting Indigenous knowledge systems, cultural values, and governance structures. Through case studies and practical exercises, students will gain a deep understanding of how to ethically manage data in a way that supports the rights and interests of Indigenous communities.

Learning objectives

  • Recall key principles of data ethics, privacy, and security, and identify how these principles apply to the collection, storage, and use of data in different contexts.
  • Respect and incorporate Indigenous knowledge systems, cultural values, and governance structures in data practices and explain the significance and concept of concept of Indigenous Data Sovereignty and how it intersects with broader ethical and security considerations in data management, with a focus on respecting Indigenous knowledge systems and cultural values.
  • Apply data ethics frameworks to real-world case studies, demonstrating how ethical data management practices can be implemented in various scenarios, including involving Indigenous communities and their data.
  • Evaluate and mitigate risks associated with data breaches and unauthorized access and describe implementation best practices for ensuring data privacy and security
  • Critically assess the ethical implications of data management decisions and develop strategies and practical solutions to ethically manage data.
  • Design a data management plan that incorporates ethical principles and security measure

Required equipment (laptop)

To complete the program, students must have access to a laptop that meets the following minimum requirements.

  • Processor (CPU): Intel Core i5 (10th gen or newer) / AMD Ryzen 5
  • RAM: 8GB (16GB recommended for better multitasking)
  • Storage: 256GB SSD (512GB preferred for larger file storage)
  • Graphics card (GPU): Integrated graphics (Intel Iris Xe or AMD Radeon)
  • Battery life: At least 6 hours
    • Note: For in-person classes, students must bring a fully charged laptop
  • Operating system: Windows 11 or macOS (Windows is preferred for Power BI)

For Online Classes

  • Webcam: Built-in or external HD webcam (USB recommended)
  • Speakers & microphone: Built-in, USB plug-in, or wireless Bluetooth
