Course description
This course will explore the fundamentals of coding and scripting for data analytics. You will develop the ability to script and code for basic tasks in data analytics in common data analytic tools such as R, Python and Excel. This will allow you to import and export data appropriately, perform fundamental data manipulations, and automate basic analysis elements.

Prerequisites
If your first language is not English, you will be asked to provide evidence of fluency through the submission of an IELTS (Academic) score of minimum 6.0 (with no component less than 5.5), TOEFL score of 550 (79 Internet Based TOEFL), completion of the UVic English Language Centre's ELPI 570 level, or equivalent level through one of our English pathway partners.
Required equipment and software
- Personal computer with reliable internet connection – a machine with administrative privileges is recommended
- Webcam or HD webcam – built-in, USB plug-in is recommended
- Speakers and microphone – built-in, USB plug-in, or wireless Bluetooth
- Operating system:
- Microsoft Windows 10
- Microsoft Windows Server 2008 SP2–2016
- Microsoft Windows 8.0 and 8.1
- macOS 10.14 Mojave or later
- Microsoft Office:
- Recommended: Excel for Microsoft 365 on Windows or macOS; or at least Excel 2019 or Excel 2016
- Microsoft Office 365 – Students will benefit from Microsoft Office 365 as it is free for the UVic community. Once you have your Netlink ID account, you can sign up for your UVic Microsoft 365 account at onlineservices.uvic.ca and download the software.
- Hardware (minimum):
- Processor: 1.4GH (this allows you to use Zoom, Excel and Brightspace at the same time)
- RAM: 2GB
- Disk space: 2GB
