Course description

This course offers a brief introduction to the theories and practices of community-based participatory research as developed by Rajesh Tandon and Budd Hall, who have led the development of these approaches since the 1970s. It will offer an introduction to the history of the field, the principles, working with not for communities, and the implications for higher education institutions. There will be Zoom conversations with Budd Hall, Rajesh Tandon and another international practitioner.

Learning objectives

  • Describe a variety of approaches to community-university engagement
  • Identify institutional structures to support CUE
  • Be familiar with the Carnegie Classification System for CUE
  • Advocate for regional or national policies on CUE

Certificate of Completion

This course can be taken either as a stand-alone learning opportunity or combined to receive a Knowledge Democracy in Higher Education Certificate of Completion. Each individual course in the series costs $150. However, learners committed to completing all five courses can take advantage of our discounted rate, which is applied to the final course in the series (KDHE150). Instead of paying $750 for all five modules, learners will pay $675.
