Course description

Using the Mearns Centre for Learning—McPherson Library’s letterpress printing presses, you will learn to hand-set metal and wood type, mix ink and use letterpress printing techniques in this hands-on, technical course. You will work with a selection of wood and metal letter type and letterpress ornaments to produce text compositions with a range of printing equipment. Using Vandercook cylinder letterpresses and proofing presses, traditional typesetting methods for contemporary text and print applications will be explored. All participants must complete a mandatory health and safety overview requirement.
