National Indigenous History Month is a time to recognize, learn about and celebrate the rich history, heritage, resilience and diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples. This month, and ahead of Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21, we invite you to take the opportunity to learn more about the history of Indigenous Peoples.

Indigenous commitment

For over 30 years, Continuing Studies at UVic has been offering programming to support Indigenous learners and communities. This includes working in partnership for over 30 years with the En'owkin Centre, an Indigenous post-secondary institution in Penticton, BC, to deliver culturally relevant educational opportunities. Additionally, there are numerous partnerships with Indigenous organizations and communities across Turtle Island for the delivery of adult learning opportunities in Indigenous language revitalization and other community and professional programs.

Indigenous focused programs and courses

Continuing Studies at UVic is committed to supporting the needs and perspectives of Indigenous learners and communities by offering accessible and culturally appropriate learning opportunities.

Currently, our offerings include:

Take the opportunity to explore the power of storytelling with UVic's inaugural Storyteller-in-Residence and renowned Tłı̨chǫ Dene author, Richard Van Camp. In partnership with the Faculty of Humanities and Continuing Studies at UVic, two online courses on the theme of recovering family medicines will be open to the wider community. Through lectures, readings, workshops and interviews with Indigenous artists, actors, storytellers and writers, students will be invited to consider the power of their own stories: personal, familial and community-based.
