Course description

The Comprehensive French Series (FREN) features four levels, each taking a full academic year (September and January term) to complete. This is the intermediate level of the series focusing on all four language competencies: listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Classes feature a balance of structural and communicative activities and an important cultural content to optimize learning. Entrance at midpoint in January is possible if your initial level is sufficient. Small classes (maximum 18) enhance individual participation. 

Learning objectives

This course will focus on all the structures, vocabulary and pronunciation necessary to perform tasks such as:

  • speak about your daily activities
  • using reflexive verbs speak about your health and physical activities give advice, suggestions and orders
  • express various sentiments and emotions express tastes and preferences
  • articulate events and circumstances in the past using imparfait and passé composé

Prerequisites

  • Mandatory initial level assessment, or
  • Successful completion of FREN200 if entering in September or of the first term of FREN300 if entering in January.

Level assessment

Students may enter the program at any level if their initial level is sufficient. A level assessment is necessary to enter the program at a higher level than level one. Please book your assessment by calling 250-721-8630 or by email at languages@uvic.ca

Format

Our online hybrid language courses make language learning flexible and convenient. The use of both synchronous and asynchronous delivery styles allows for both real-time virtual classroom conversation practice (synchronous delivery) and self-paced study (asynchronous delivery). The synchronous delivery style will occur during the scheduled class dates and time, using Zoom for videoconferencing, chat and screen sharing for class instruction and pair/group work. The asynchronous delivery style uses Brightspace, an online environment where learners can access class materials and resources for self-paced study throughout the week. Educational activities can include exercises, readings, forums, audio/video files, quizzes, tests, assignments, oral and written presentations.
