Course description

The Comprehensive French Series (FREN) features four levels, each taking a full academic year (September and January term) to complete. This is the beginner level of the series focusing on all four language competencies: listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Classes feature a balance of structural and communicative activities. Entrance at midpoint in January is possible if your initial level is sufficient. Small classes (maximum 18) enhance individual participation. 

Learning objectives

This course will focus on all the structures, vocabulary and pronunciation necessary to perform tasks such as:

  • speak about your interests
  • use idiomatic expressions with the verb "faire" and "avoir"
  • use idiomatic impersonal constructions such as “il faut” use “pouvoir” and "vouloir" in a variety of contexts and meanings
  • talk about past events in the "passé composé"

Prerequisites

  • Mandatory initial level assessment, or
  • Successful completion of FREN100 if entering in September or of the first term of FREN200 if entering in January.

Level assessment

Students may enter the program at any level if their initial level is sufficient. A level assessment is necessary to enter the program at a higher level than level one. Please book your assessment by calling 250-721-8630 or by email at languages@uvic.ca.

Format

Our online hybrid language courses make language learning flexible and convenient. The use of both synchronous and asynchronous delivery styles allows for both real-time virtual classroom conversation practice (synchronous delivery) and self-paced study (asynchronous delivery). The synchronous delivery style will occur during the scheduled class dates and time, using Zoom for videoconferencing, chat and screen sharing for class instruction and pair/group work. The asynchronous delivery style uses Brightspace, an online environment where learners can access class materials and resources for self-paced study throughout the week. Educational activities can include exercises, readings, forums, audio/video files, quizzes, tests, assignments, oral and written presentations.
