Course Series
This is a comprehensive non-credit part-time program in French, focusing on reading, writing, listening and speaking and is open to adults at all levels of proficiency. They are designed to meet the needs of a wide audience from working professionals, to lifelong learners, to people who are new to Canada, to parents with children in French immersion—anyone wanting to confidently and competently develop fluency in French.
The mandate of this program is to provide members of the community with educational programs to achieve an advanced command of the French language and a detailed knowledge of the Francophone culture in Canada and of Francophone cultures in the world.
The Comprehensive French Series (FREN) features four levels, each taking a full academic year (September and January term) to complete. Each level is aligned with the internationally recognised DELF benchmarks A1, A2, B1 and B2. Evening classes are offered for all levels, and a daytime option is offered at some levels if enrollment permits.
You can start as a beginner and register in FREN100, but if you already know some French we offer an assessment to determine which level is appropriate for you. To book your French Language level assessment please call 250-721-8630 or e-mail languages@uvic.ca.
These courses feature a required textbook and one exam per term. Each term is 13 weeks and consists of a two-hour class twice per week.
Upon successful completion of each level (both terms), students will receive a Certificate of Completion.
