UVic Continuing Studies' certificate program in Environmental and Occupational Health is aimed at:

  • individuals working in the fields of environment, health or related occupations who want to have specialized environmental, occupational and health training
  • those seeking employment in the private or public sectors where there is an increasing concern for employee health and the protection of the environment
  • those looking for a change in career to a rapidly expanding field and wishing to get a professional certificate
  • managers in environmental and occupational health who are seeking continuing professional education

Program outcomes

This certificate program provides knowledge, skills and practical information in an integrated approach. You'll learn to:

  • explore a wide spectrum of issues relating to the expanding field of environmental health
  • anticipate and manage emerging environmental health issues and develop strategies to assess and communicate risks
  • determine which agents in the workplace may affect human health
  • identify effects of toxic substances on health and the environment and how to implement appropriate environmental control measures
  • develop programs that will improve health in the work environment

Admission and completion requirements

Admission requirements

You need one of the following to be eligible for admission:

  • a university degree (or relevant professional qualifications) and three years of work experience
  • high school graduation and five years of work experience
  • any combination of equivalent education and work experience

English language requirement for international students

International students must also meet the requirements above. In addition, applicants whose first language is not English must submit proof of English proficiency (TOEFL 90 on the online test or 575 on the paper-based test, with no section less than 20 or IELTS 6.5, with no individual component less than 6.0).

Completion requirements

Successful completion of eight courses: four core courses and four electives.
