Are you interested in working in the healthcare field in an English-speaking setting? The English Communication for Healthcare program will boost your confidence speaking with clients and in interdisciplinary team. This course will also help prepare you to meet the language requirements of various healthcare training programs. You will learn pronunciation, medical terminology, practical communication skills, and Canadian concepts of health and wellness that you can use in local and international environments. Improve your confidence, competence and employability with English Communication for Healthcare.

By the end of the course, you will be familiar with the following:

  • Pronunciation and vocabulary acquisition principles for medical terminology
  • Active listening strategies for effective communication in interdisciplinary teams
  • Canadian communication skills, such as giving feedback and responding to complaints
  • Canadian concepts of health and wellness, such as determinants of health and healthcare ethics

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • communicate appropriately with clients and interdisciplinary health team members
  • effectively report detailed and accurate medical information
  • respond effectively to oral explanations, questions, requests, and instructions in a healthcare setting
  • apply active listening strategies when communicating with clients, families, and health team members
  • apply Canadian concepts of health and wellness to analyze case studies
  • make comparisons of healthcare in Canada with other international models
  • gain an immersive experience in the culture of Canadian health care delivery

Who is this program for?

This program is intended for people who are interested in working in the healthcare field and have a high-intermediate level of English.  You may be currently a student or educator in the healthcare field.  Prior work experience in healthcare is not required.

Admission requirements

To study in this program, you must:

  • be 18 years old by the program start date
  • meet Canadian visa requirements
  • have an intermediate or higher knowledge of English (recommend CEFR B1or higher)
  • have experience studying or working in a healthcare field
