Indigenization of French Courses and Greater Well-being in BC
COURSE
Course description
Welcome to the French Immersion workshop series
The purpose of this workshop is to provide participants with tools for teaching that integrates knowledge of Indigenous language (Southern Michif, Chinook wawa), communication technology (Wampum), and Indigenous notions of collective rather than individualist literacy. Participants will be shown two unit plans related to Indigenous literacy and the lasting interrelationship (braiding) of Indigenous languages and French. Using an inquiry-based activity involving group work to match concepts and situations, participants will understand the utility of simple concepts drawn from linguistics (hybrid language, creole, vehicular language) to drive student appreciation for the interconnections between indigenous and colonial languages and the value of Indigenous-led language revitalization initiatives. We will wrap up the workshop with a discussion of how this approach helps students contextualise their own learning journey in French in a holistic way, and provides them with different ways to assess and honour their proficiency.
