In the rapidly evolving world of technology, staying current with new tools and skills is essential for success. In the second part of our Q&A with Jo-Anne Clarke, dean of Continuing Studies at UVic, she talks more about how technology is reshaping education and the importance of shared learning experiences.
Read on and discover how our micro-certificates are preparing learners to not only master technology but to thrive in their careers.
When it comes to technical training, a common misconception is that people can master new technologies simply by watching video tutorials or following job aids. However, as an adult educator, I know that meaningful learning happens through context, coaching and connection.
It’s not just about learning how to use software—it's about understanding its applications, solving problems and thinking critically. That’s why our technology courses don’t just teach participants how to use programs; they also focus on essential skills like communication, critical thinking and planning.
For example, our Micro-certificate in Administrative Technology includes a Microsoft Office bootcamp where learners gain proficiency in MS Office tools, but they also build skills in digital communication within a business environment.
I’ve mentioned a few in part one of the Q&A article on technology and AI, which includes:
I would be remiss if I didn’t mention our Micro-certificate in Business Intelligence and Data Analysis, which has been running successfully for a number of years. Understanding how to extract and make sense of data is vital to solving business problems and making informed decisions.
Participants in this program not only gain proficiency in basic data coding but also learn to use popular reporting and visualization tools like Excel and Tableau to present data in clear, accessible formats. Depending on their course selection, learners can either focus more on business analysis or dive deeper into machine learning and its application in business.
The combination of data analytics and business intelligence is a powerful skill set that is sought after in almost every industry today. Our graduates are securing good, well-paying jobs in both private and public sectors.
The programs I have highlighted so far are very popular programs because they have broad audience appeal and applicability. But we also offer specialized technology programs tailored to specific industries.
Our new LiDAR Fundamentals for Climate Change Risk Analysis micro-certificate is designed for entry-level or mid-career professionals in geomatics and environmental sciences. This program teaches participants how to use remote sensing data via LiDAR, to assess environmental risks and guide decision-making in resource management.
As with all our programs, there’s a strong mix of theory and practical experience. Learners gain hands-on experience working with provincial LiDAR data and imagery, enhancing their ability to interpret and apply this information in real-world scenarios.
I want to emphasize that the fast pace of technological advancement can be overwhelming, and it's easy to feel left behind. But remember, if you're feeling that way, so are others. Taking a continuing education class with others, whether in person or online, provides people with a supportive and stimulating environment to learn, practise, make mistakes and network with others. Learning is a shared journey, not a solitary challenge.
