Being and Learning Outdoors Viewed Through the Core Competencies
COURSE
Course description
Welcome to the French Immersion workshop series
The workshop focuses on being outdoors as a learning option. Through the use of a rubric matching the K-9 Physical and Health Education curriculum (main content areas relating to learning outdoors) to Core Competencies, the choice to be outdoors can more readily be made. The idea is to encourage educators to view being outdoors as a viable option for which planning and assessment are made easier. Through relevant stories, examples, a possible walk and games, and a K-9 competencies rubric, let’s work on how to teach being outdoors, being in connection with land/water, and being attentive to our own learning. The workshop will connect to the First Peoples Principles of Learning. Over the span of 90 minutes, participants will be introduced to the topic and have the opportunity to connect with peers. Colleagues will hopefully find the rubric useful as a means to plan and assess being outdoors, and generate students’ self-assessments. The goal is to connect outdoor learning itself to the curriculum and core competencies as a learning experience.
