Restoration of Natural Systems – Diploma
Course description
Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) play a crucial role in the ecosystems of British Columbia, offering diverse cultural, economic, and ecological value, yet they remain an underexplored resource. This course focuses on a project-based, hands-on approach to understanding NTFP management and restoration, with an emphasis on ecological, cultural, and legal considerations. Students will analyze local sites and develop a restoration and management plan for NTFPs based on ecosystem classification, Indigenous governance, and relevant regulatory frameworks.
Throughout the course, you will build a comprehensive management or restoration plan that integrates real-world data to assess the sustainability of key NTFP species, evaluate current land use impacts, and design actionable restoration and management strategies. Topics will cover a broad spectrum of NTFP uses, including harvesting for economic purposes, cultural and spiritual practices, and ecosystem restoration. By the end of the course, students will be equipped with a practical process and template for management and restoration of NTFP sites in their local contexts.
Format
Online Asynchronous delivery style over a 12-week period, requiring approximately 10 hours of coursework per week.
