Course description
This course is designed for those who have completed the previous levels and are able to build a basic understanding of the Arabic language and alphabet, and wish to further develop their language skills. This course takes you on a journey towards greater proficiency in Arabic language and culture. Through interactive lessons, authentic materials and immersive activities, you will continue to enhance your reading, writing, listening and speaking abilities, enabling you to engage in more complex conversations and comprehend a wider range of Arabic texts. By the end of this course, you will be equipped to navigate real-life situations in Arabic-speaking environments and deepen your appreciation for the culture.
Learning objectives
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
- improve their communication skills and develop the ability to express ideas, thoughts, with increased accuracy in Arabic
- expand and build an extensive vocabulary that will enable them to discuss a wide range of topics, including everyday life, current events, and cultural subjects
- enhance their listening skills and improve their understanding of spoken Arabic, including various dialects, through a variety of authentic audio materials such as news broadcasts, interviews, and dialogues
- refine their reading skills and ability and develop their ability to extract valuable information and cultural insights
- gain a deeper understanding of Arabic culture, traditions, customs, and societal norms, enabling them to interact respectfully in Arabic-speaking communities and fostering cross-cultural understanding and developĀ an appreciation for the rich history, literature, and arts of the Arabic-speaking world
- improve their Arabic grammar and get more familiarity with some syntax rules to construct more complex sentences and convey nuanced meanings
- engage in discussions on various topics and develop the ability to hold conversations on some familiar subjects
- develop writing skills and start to produce coherent short and well-structured written texts in Arabic

- You can tell which day and what time it is in Arabic
- You can introduce a friend or a family member using demonstrative pronouns and possessive endings
- You can talk about your daily routine
- You can write short texts in Arabic
Dates
World Language courses are offered three times per year:
- September (registration opens in June)
- January (registration opens in November)
- April (registration opens in November)
Format
Our online hybrid language courses make language learning flexible and convenient. The use of both synchronous and asynchronous delivery styles allows for both real-time virtual classroom conversation practice (synchronous delivery) and self-paced study (asynchronous delivery). The synchronous delivery style will occur during the scheduled class dates and time, using Zoom for videoconferencing, chat and screen sharing for class instruction and pair/group work. The asynchronous delivery style uses Brightspace, an online environment where learners can access class materials and resources for self-paced study throughout the week. Educational activities can include exercises, readings, forums, audio/video files, quizzes, etc.
