Course description
Punjabi, a vibrant Indo-Aryan language spoken by over 113 million people worldwide, resonates through the heart of the Punjab region, encompassing parts of both Pakistan and India. Its melodious sounds and long literary heritage have enriched countless works of poetry, music and everyday conversations. Whether you're fascinated by the Bhangra dance, the soulful Qawwali music tradition, or simply seek to connect with Punjabi speakers on a personal level, this introductory course is your gateway to unlocking this captivating language.
Learning objectives
After completing this course, students will be able to:
- confidently read and write Gurmukhi, including alphabets, vowels and consonants
- learn basic pronunciation rules to improve listening and speaking skills
- learn essential greetings, numbers, days of the week, months and seasons
- acquire vocabulary related to fruits, vegetables, body parts and school culture, and practice using these in simple sentences
- understand noun and verb usage, including conjugation and sentence structure
- learn past, present and future tenses, and practice using them in conversations about self, family, friends and travel
- learn about Punjabi cuisine, including ingredients, spices, regional variations and dining etiquette
- understand the significance of major Punjabi festivals, their customs, and how they are celebrated
- learn the names of immediate and extended family members in Punjabi
- understand family structures and relationships, including in-law terminology
Dates
World Language courses are offered three times per year:
- September (registration opens in June)
- January (registration opens in November)
- April (registration opens in November)
Format
Our online hybrid language courses make language learning flexible and convenient. The use of both synchronous and asynchronous delivery styles allows for both real-time virtual classroom conversation practice (synchronous delivery) and self-paced study (asynchronous delivery). The synchronous delivery style will occur during the scheduled class dates and time, using Zoom for videoconferencing, chat and screen sharing for class instruction and pair/group work. The asynchronous delivery style uses Brightspace, an online environment where learners can access class materials and resources for self-paced study throughout the week. Educational activities can include exercises, readings, forums, audio/video files, quizzes, etc.
