Lies, Cunning and Control: Machiavelli and the Art of Power
COURSE
Course description
Machiavelli, renaissance diplomat and philosopher, is best known for his book on politics, The Prince.
His name is forever associated with cunning, manipulation, power, corruption, and governing by fear and persuasion. He developed realpolitik, which removes morality and ethics from politics, and instead, prioritizes power through dominance over competition and enemies. He asked, ‘is it better to be feared than loved?’
Machiavelli viewed politics as a game of manipulation; politicians must preserve power and control, no matter the cost, while providing the illusion of being just and moral.
Discover the timeless relevance of Machiavelli’s ideas and the tradition of politics he criticizes. Question, "is it better to be feared than loved?"
