The Role of Gut Bacteria in Inflammatory Bowel Disease

COURSE

Course description

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a group of chronic inflammatory gut disorders, the most common being ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. A recent report found IBD is increasing in Canada at a rate that is among the highest in the world. Irritable bowel syndrome is frequently mistaken as a form of IBD, and this confusion will be addressed. Since multiple factors are involved in IBD development, the exact cause is unknown. Gut bacteria and the mucosal immune system have been linked to IBD, and we will discuss recent research seeking more effective treatments.
