Due to the ongoing pandemic, the English Language Centre at UVic has cancelled all on-campus programs until January 2022 except for ELPI September with a limited availability. Please see this important update about what students can expect in ELPI September.

For those registered in cancelled programs, students have the choice of a: full refund, transfer to a future program, or transfer to an online program (with the balance of fees settled).

Program description

Successful “UAP” completion satisfies the English requirement for admission to many UVic undergraduate degree programs.

This intensive summer program will help prepare you for success as a UVic degree student by polishing your academic English skills and providing an introduction to Canadian culture.

UAP develops skills in:

  • Oral presentations
  • Note-taking and report-writing
  • Reading academic texts
  • Research

Application information

Registration requirements

To study in this program, you must have a minimum of one of the following exam scores:

  • IELTS overall score of 6 or higher with a minimum score of 5.5 in each skill area (R/L/S/W)
  • iBT TOEFL score of 79 or higher with no section less than 17 (R/L/S/W)
  • CAEL 60 with no subscore less than 50
  • Passing Grade (80%) for level 570 Academic in the Intensive English (ELPI) program
  • Passing Grade (80%) for level 570 General in the Intensive English (ELPI) program, with a passing grade on the UAP writing test
