Program description

These advanced programs offer academic English preparation if you want to pursue a UVic degree program.  Successful "UAP" completion satisfies the English requirement for admission to many UVic undergraduate degree programs.

UAP develops skills in:

  • Oral presentations 

  • Note-taking and report-writing

  • Reading academic texts 

  • Research

12-Week UAP

  • 20 class hours per week (highest level of the ELPI program)
  • A specialized "University Skills for Success" elective class
  • Study Skills and Academic Integrity workshops
  • ELC Learning Centre before/after classes

4-Week UAP

  • 20 class hours per week
  • 2 courses: "Advanced English" and "Introduction to Canadian Studies" (CS101)
  • Study Skills and Academic Integrity workshops
  • Weekly writing clinics
  • Teaching assistants who provide tutorial support for both courses

Application information

Registration requirements

To study in this program, you must:

  • successfully complete an entrance exam, written test and personal interview
  • have a minimum of one of the following exam scores:
    • IELTS overall score of 6 or higher with a minimum score of 5.5 in each skill area (R/L/S/W)
    • iBT TOEFL score of 79 or higher with no section less than 17 (R/L/S/W)
    • CAEL 60 with no subscore less than 50
    • Passing Grade (80%) for level 570 Academic in the 12-Week Intensive Program
    • Passing Grade (80%) for level 570 General in the 12-Week Intensive Program, with a passing grade on the UAP writing test
