Our English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) program is designed to suit your group's unique goals, interests and needs from stimulating, interactive and international teaching perspectives. Program description

English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) is a practical program that provides high-quality skills training for instructors who teach subject content in English in their home countries.

Participants will learn from experts in the field of education, applied linguistics, CLIL and internationalization. This program offers a stimulating, interactive teaching and learning environment. Education professionals will develop their abilities through a variety of teaching methodologies, curriculum-planning strategies and communicative or experiential classroom techniques. One of the goals of this program is to enable our teachers to plan, design and develop effective lessons in English.

The EMI program is designed to fit the goals, interests and needs of the participants. This includes:

  • formal classroom instruction (approximately 60 hours, but it can be customized to fit your group's needs and timeline)
  • professional development workshops and lectures
  • various socio-cultural events
  • a safe and respectful English immersion context for the enhancement of language, cultural intelligence and educational leadership skills

  • the role of an EMI instructor
  • EMI and CLIL pedagogies and methodologies
  • evaluating content and how to integrate it into the classroom
  • English for teaching purposes
  • internationalizing the curriculum
  • using technology in the classroom
  • assessment/evaluation/testing in EMI classes
  • an introduction to the Canadian education system
  • writing for professionals

Who is this program for?

This program is for international instructors (primary, secondary and post-secondary education) looking to develop skills to teach their subject area in English.

Admission requirements

The intensive nature of this program requires potential candidates to:

  • be an international, non-native English-speaking education professional with a current teaching or
    leadership assignment
  • hold or be in the process of obtaining a first degree or a teaching certificate from an accredited
    university or post-secondary institution
  • fluency in English*:
    • TOEFL iBT 71
    • IELTS 5.5 or equivalent
    • or a document supporting their participation in the program by their district
      administration plan

*We will not accept tests taken more than two years before your application to the English Language Centre.
