Course description
Develop essential skills in modern technical and business writing, particularly in usability, style and structure. This course will explore other topics such as technology as part of the research, writing, revision and presentation processes. You will also learn how to write proposals, reports, descriptions, and documents for general audiences.
Formerly part of ENGL 301. Credit will only be granted for one of ENGL 301 or ENSH 303.

Learning objectives
- Develop an understanding of business communication that focuses on setting objectives, meeting an audience’s needs, and achieving specific intended outcomes
- Enhance foundational skills in effective written, visual and oral communication across media platforms used in contemporary workplaces
- Refine the mechanics of communication (such as grammar, punctuation and sentence structure), while considering such influences as style, genre, and document design
- Develop an understanding of how genre affects the practice of professional communication, through the reading and analysis of documents exemplifying specific business writing formats
- Practice the planning, drafting, and revision of documents within various genres key to contemporary business workplaces, such as letters, media releases, proposals, and reports
- Practice skills in social perceptiveness, particularly in terms of how audiences are affected by such communication choices as word choice, tone, rhetorical devices, message structure and document design
