Words for the Soul: Indigenous Literature in the Classroom

Course description
This workshop will expose participants to diverse literary genres by Indigenous authors presented in various formats (i.e. audio, film, etc.), and will propose ways in which such works can be used in the classroom to develop awareness of Indigenous ways of being and knowing. Through practical examples, participants will be better informed about the relevance of the written word in contemporary settings and contexts, and appreciate them vis-à-vis other forms of Indigenous literary representations.
This workshop is focussed on supporting elementary and middle school teachers.
Learning objectives
- Create a repository/database of resources useful to their practice
- Develop one or more examples on how to use some of those resources
- Identify and relate to literary works of Indigenous authors representing diverse genres
