Using Backward Design to Support Intentional Literacy for All Learners

Part of: October Teacher Pro-D Day

Course description

In this session, we’ll explore how Backward Design can be used to support literacy development for all students, particularly those struggling readers in upper elementary grades. We will demonstrate how to apply Backward Design using a flexible formula that can be used across all grades and subjects.

We will also focus on teaching strategies to create inclusive classrooms where students feel comfortable working at different levels while achieving similar goals. The importance of inclusion will be emphasized, especially when age-appropriate literacy materials are often scarce for upper elementary students. We will discuss strategies for meeting students' diverse needs.

Additionally, we’ll introduce UFLI's research-based scope and sequence through decodable workbooks we have created, showcasing how these tools can create a more inclusive, purposeful, and Backward Design-driven approach to teaching literacy.

Teachers will leave with a solid understanding of how to incorporate Backward Design into their lesson planning, strategies on how to create inclusive classrooms, and practical strategies to create intentional literacy plans that support the success of all students.

Free literacy resources will be provided.
