If you are a student in our Business & Management Programs, chances are you’ve benefited from your interactions with these two ladies. Cathy Henderson and Kim Carver are the program assistants, and in Kim’s words, that means "answering lots of initial inquiries about [the program], by phone, email and in person. [We also support] students in their studies and instructors in the preparation and delivery of their classes."
Our business programs are popular amongst both domestic and international students, and according to Cathy, "Working with students from all over the globe is a unique and valuable experience for me. I enjoy getting to know them and assisting them with navigating their study plans. The neatest thing is watching them flourish as they expand their knowledge base and increase their confidence level. What a wonderful experience to be a part of!"
But so often, while these ladies may come to know a lot about our students and their life circumstances and goals and dreams, it’s not very often that our students get to know much about these ladies. So here a chance to get to know them a little bit better:
What do you keep on your desk and what does it mean to you? Gifts/cards from students, my colleagues and friends…symbols of appreciation that uplift and encourage me. And things from my kids (pics, mementos). Feeling the love!
If you could take any Continuing Studies course this term, which would it be? Why? A painting class. It is my secret desire to paint, probably with watercolours. I have never painted anything, except walls and furniture and my kids’ faces! I have this dream that I can be an amazing artist….and singer….and writer! LOL!
Which famous person (dead or alive) would you like to have dinner with?
Maya Angelou. She was such a brave and brilliant woman, who lived her life with such celebration and dignity. One of my favourite quotes from her: "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." I try to live that every day.
Run or walk? Walk – I walk everywhere! I get to savour the sights, sounds, and scents of my world around me. It’s my chosen mode of meditation!
After a long day at the office, how do you unwind? I like to go home, maybe have a cocktail, then sit out on the deck, or putter around the garden if the weather is nice. I like to cook. And a walk, before or after dinner, down to the water. If the weather is cool, or rainy, I like to make a fire, make a pot of tea, and have a bubble bath. There's a skylight above the tub, so I can watch the clouds go by. My husband got me a little book stand, and I've mastered the art of turning the faucets on and off with my toes. I can stay in there happily for hours; a novel length.
What is your greatest extravagance? Each spring I buy a fine bottle of balsamic vinegar. Just a few drops sets off the flavor of anything - from tomatoes to ice cream!
What is your most treasured possession? I have a light up umbrella I really enjoy in the darkness or rain. Tiny points of light, that twinkle. It makes me, and others smile.
Who is your favourite hero in fiction? Pippi Longstocking. She lives in a colourful house in the forest. She is independent, unusually strong (she can lift her horse with her own two hands!), and adventurous, with a style all her own.
