Tiny Fossils: A Window to the Ocean of the Past

Part of: UVic on the Peninsula

Course description

What's a cooler fossil than dinosaurs? Fossils of tiny plankton. Explore the world of marine micropaleontology and the four main groups that make up our marine fossil records: the diatoms, foraminifera, radiolarians and calcareous nannofossils. We'll talk about the expanse of geologic time; learn about a type of fossil that can be seen from space and with a microscope (but not with the naked eye); see rocks from a time when the United Kingdom was like the Bahamas today; talk about rapid changes in climate; and learn how we get our samples from deep within the ocean bottom.
