How Cities Source Renewable Electricity: The Mechanisms and Actors Involved in the Regional Sourcing of Renewable Energy

This presentation explores how the most innovative and ambitious cities are sourcing large-scale renewable electricity from surrounding regions as part of the effort to decarbonize their electricity grids and wider economies. This examination is achieved through the identification and examination of energy planning strategies called regional renewable energy procurement mechanisms. The presentation will also involve an analysis of the types of actors involved in the identified mechanisms. Understanding how different types of entities are involved in the regional sourcing of renewable electricity provides insight into public response to renewable energy development—and how the resources invested in decarbonization have the potential to address, or reinforce, the uneven distribution of the impacts and benefits of energy development.
