The Chinese in Canada and Political Change in China, 1898–1918
COURSE
Course description
Learn how Chinese migrants broke through racist barriers to identify themselves with Canadian constitutional monarchism and American republicanism in the reformist and revolutionary fights for a modern China. Gain insight into how Chinese migrants living in Victoria and Vancouver launched an overseas Chinese political movement for the reform of both China and Chinatowns for a decade starting in 1899. Discover previously untold stories of historic events in Canadian history, such as the first Chinese women’s political association that began in Victoria in 1903 and spread to ten Canadian and American cities, as well as the interrelated political assassinations in the Chinatowns of San Francisco and Victoria.
