Beyond the tweed curtain lie stately homes among oak trees on winding streets hugging the rocky coastline. This is one stereotypical impression of Oak Bay, but local historian John Adams will delve deeper and examine its Indigenous origins and its gradual transformation in the 1800s to a place of farms and fields. Find out about the Willows racetrack, Chinese market gardens, the plan to create an English-style seaside resort and how the district almost became the home for the University of British Columbia. This will be a richly illustrated talk with period photographs and maps.
