From Satanic Panic to Qanon: Sociology and the Study of Moral Panics
COURSE
Course description
Remember when Victoria was the "Satanic capital of Canada?" Remember when the United States was caught in the grip of a panic alleging ritualistic abuse in daycares? What about the fears that children were being trafficked across Canada in furniture boxes by the online retailer Wayfair? These beliefs—and the actions they spawned—are moral panics. This lecture series will examine the strange and fascinating landscape of moral panics in North America, from the "Satanic Panic" of the 1970s, to Qanon and other panics of the 21st century.
