Course description

After the end of the Second World War, Canadian officials tried to expel thousands of citizens to Japan. The battle over exile reached the highest courts of the land and the front pages of newspapers. Could thousands of Canadians—subjected to uprooting, internment and dispossession on the basis of race—now be forced from the country and stripped of citizenship? Could people born in a country be compelled to live elsewhere? The case required Canada to confront fundamental questions of constitutional law, racism and citizenship, and the mixed answers from the 1940s leave legacies that we still grapple with today.
