Language and Culture FAQ
The Language and Culture program is designed for high-beginner to advanced English language learners who want to improve their English while exploring Canadian culture and life in Victoria, BC.
Students develop their speaking, listening and communication skills for work, travel, business or future studies in a welcoming and supportive environment.
The Language and Culture program is offered throughout the year.
Program schedules vary depending on the season:
- May-August: English classes are held Monday to Friday, with socio-cultural activities and excursions on most afternoons.
- September-March: English classes are held Monday to Thursday, with cultural activities and field trips every Friday.
We accept applications until the program is full, up to one month before the program start date.
However, because programs can fill quickly, we recommend applying 4-5 months in advance to allow enough time for visa applications and travel arrangements.

- English classes: Monday-Friday, 8:30 am-12:30 pm
- Activities and excursions: Most afternoons, approximately 2:00-4:00 pm
- Optional evening activities available for students living in residence
September-March
- English classes: Monday-Thursday
- 9:00-11:30 am
- 12:30-3:00 pm
- Fridays: Cultural activities and field trips, typically 9:00 am-4:00 pm
No. All class materials and textbooks are included in the program tuition fee.
The Language and Culture program includes cultural, social and recreational activities that complement your English studies.
Activities vary by season and may include:
- Field trips
- Coffee socials
- Culture nights
- Sports and recreation
- Arts and crafts
- Whale watching
- Butchart Gardens
- Trips to Vancouver
- Kayaking
- Hiking
Students also have access to optional social activities led by our Cultural Assistant team.
Yes. Language and Cultural Engagement activities are an important part of the program and contribute to the overall learning experience. Students are expected to participate in scheduled cultural activities, workshops and excursions.
Student level changes are rare and are instructor-driven. Instructors complete diagnostic assessments early in the program to confirm placement. If instructors determine that a student has been placed incorrectly, they may recommend a level change. All level changes are reviewed and approved by an independent team of instructors.

- September-June: Students may stay with a local homestay family (subject to availability).
- July-August: Students may stay in UVic dormitories.
Accommodation options vary by intake and availability.
No. Accommodation is optional. Students may arrange their own housing if they prefer.
Many summer students choose to stay in UVic dormitories because they enjoy the convenience and optional evening activities available to residence students.
Students living in UVic dormitories receive a declining-balance meal plan loaded onto their UVic ONECard. The meal plan is designed to provide approximately three meals per day throughout the program.
Students who exceed their allotted balance will need to add additional funds. Information about meal plans and adding funds will be provided at the start of the program.
