Which ELC program(s) did you attend?

I attended Intensive English and two Monthly English programs.

What made your ELC program special?

I met amazing teachers and so many friends from different countries.

What is the most memorable thing that happened to you as an ELC student?

I gave a speech at the farewell party. I was very shy originally, but I got more confident after that!

Do you have any favourite memories of Canadian culture?

People in Victoria really like small talk, they enjoy talking even with a stranger who they met on the bus. My host family asked me “How was your day?” at dinner time every day. After I came back to Japan, I still enjoy talking about daily life!

How did learning with students from other cultures change how you see the world?

I learned that it’s fun to talk with friends and to be honest about how I feel. My friends I met in Victoria were extrovert, talkative, and made me more optimistic.

Did studying English with us open any new opportunities for you? What are you doing now?

I’ve met so many friends from different countries through some events held by ELC, like the Karaoke party, coffee social, and workshop! It let me know how fun it is to communicate in English. Now, I plan to work part time at an international preschool! I can have fun learning English and improve my English more there!

What's it like living in Victoria?

People were friendly and nature and the ocean were so beautiful!

Best advice for new students

If you came here, you could get unforgettable memories with so many friends from different countries.
Your mind might be changed, like me. Before you come to UVic, you should think about yourself and your country. It could be useful when you talk with someone from different countries. Also, you don’t feel nervous to speak English. Just try many times! My favorite teacher said, "Be strong, be wrong!"
