Which ELC program(s) did you attend?
I attended the Intensive English (ELPI) program.
What made your ELC program special?
I met many friends from different countries and kind teachers who encouraged me to use and improve my English. Life in UVic or Victoria was not only an English learning program, but also a wonderful experience. Before coming here, I did not know I was able to meet people from around the world, and I did not know I can use English to do anything. It was the best choice I made in my life.
What is the most memorable thing that happened to you as an ELC student?
The most memorable thing was that a classmate told me, “You are my first friend in Victoria. You have changed my life here. I won’t forget this truth.” We were from different countries and used a language which was not our mother tongue, but we could still communicate fluently. It was beyond what I had expected before attending ELPI. It was the first time I realized English could be a tool to widen my world.
Do you have any favourite memories of Canadian culture?
On Canada Day, I went downtown. I saw that almost all people were wearing white or red clothes, including pants. Some shopkeepers shared some little flags, and some bus drivers drove passengers for free. It was the most “Canadian“ day. I experienced how kind the Canadians were.
How did learning with students from other cultures change how you see the world?
Students and teachers shared their culture with people. I learned a lot of knowledge and culture from them. It broadened my horizon. The world is huge, and many corners are waiting for me to explore. Life is not the blueprint which we must follow. It is a journey that we need to explore. I want to see more of the world after learning in UVic.
Did studying English with us open any new opportunities for you? What are you doing now?
I am working in Canada now. And I will try to work and live in an English-speaking country in the future. That was my dream in my childhood. Now it is not a dream for me.
I loved the weather in Victoria. When I arrived here, the temperature was only 9 degrees Celsius. However, I didn’t feel chilly or cold. The humidity was the lower thanTaiwan, which made me feel comfortable, and also in summer. At the end of the semester was July, the weather was pleasant, too! I enjoyed sitting on the lawn and having snacks with friends.
If you had this idea, please step on it! It will be a memorable and worthwhile experience in your life. Every moment will leave something in your life. And this ELC program will bring you happiness, skills and friendship. Giving you a chance to change your life won’t let yourself regret.
