Kevin Go shared that the ELPI program helped him improve his English through challenging speaking, writing, and presentation tasks, and he felt proud seeing his progress over time. He also enjoyed meeting friends from many countries and memorable experiences like Halloween, where there was pumpkin carving, an escape room and a costume contest.

Which ELC program did you attend?

I attended the Intensive English (ELPI) program.

What made your ELC program special?

Before this program, I didn’t have a chance to focus on various English skills hard. For 3 months, I did a lot of talking, writing and presentations. The tasks were always challenging, but every time I finished it, my English improved and I felt very proud. One more thing that makes this program special is we can study and communicate with people from other countries. I met many friends from Japan, China, Taiwan, Mexico and so on. We studied, talked and spent time with them. I’d always had Korean friends before, but thanks to this program, I could become a more global person.

What is the most memorable thing that happened to you as an ELC student?

The most memorable thing during this program was Halloween. I bought a black ghost costume, a stick and some candies the day before, and I went to school wearing the costume. Many students were surprised but it was a lot of fun. Besides me, many other students prepared their costumes as well, and there were many events in the Continuing Studies Building like pumpkin carving, escape room, costume contest that day. It was truly enjoyable and unforgettable.

Do you have any favourite memories of Canadian culture?

For me, living in Victoria was different a lot from my hometown, Seoul. I used to live in a busy city. On the other hand, Victoria is very peaceful and relaxed place which has rich nature and wildlife. It was very new for me to see deers, peacocks on the road, at a park and school. I liked Victoria’s environment so much that I walked a full loop around it. Seoul was more convenient because it has stores and entertainment everywhere, but Victoria offered a different kind of charm.

How did learning with students from other cultures change how you see the world?

Learning with friends from other countries was a totally new experience for me. First, to communicate with them, I had to use English. Additionally, classes often have discussion time, and it has a variety of topics from our interest, life and values. Every time we have a discussion, opinions differ from country to country, and even within each country, people have different views. You may feel the world is very big and there are a wide variety of people who have various thoughts.

Did studying English with us open any new opportunities for you? What are you doing now?

Actually, I’m supposed to work for the Korean Army. In the army they often recruit people to go overseas and perform a mission, get education or training. English skill is very important when I apply for such things and make a good career there. So I’m still trying to make my English better to be always ready to catch a chance.

Advice for new students

The one thing I want to advise to future students, is enjoy your life in Canada in various ways. Don’t limit yourself to regular class course. UVic and the ELC always offer you many events besides classes, and many students are passionate about talking to new friends. Even if you feel busy and tired after class, just join a school event, visit the learning centre, and have some conversation with friends from other countries. And Victoria is going to be your second hometown, so explore this place as much as you can. Go out, visit new places and search for new things every single day.

What's Victoria like?

First time I came to Victoria. I knew nothing about it, so I started from zero. I started visiting new cafes, restaurants and shops and I tried to find new things like weekly conversation club and hockey game. Focusing not only learning English but also making new experiences made my time in Victoria more meaningful and precious.
