Which ELC programs did you attend?

I attended the Intensive English (ELPI) and Summer Language and Culture programs.

What made your ELC program special?

All the people who shared my life in Victoria—my friends, teachers, CA staff, and host family—made the ELC program even more special.

What is the most memorable thing that happened to you as an ELC student?

During the farewell party at the end of my final ELC program, I had the honor of giving a speech as the valedictorian, sharing my experiences at UVic. Delivering a speech in English, which is not my first language, in front of so many people was a big challenge for me. However, it was an incredibly meaningful moment to share my journey and express my heartfelt gratitude to the friends, teachers, and CAstaff who made the past few months so special. Through this experience, I was able to grow both personally and academically.

Do you have any favourite memories of Canadian culture?

I really liked how people in Victoria say “Thank you” when they get off the bus. It’s just a small word, but it carries so much warmth.

How did learning with students from other cultures change how you see the world?

The time I spent studying and living with friends from different countries helped me become more interested in various cultures and global issues. It also motivated me to keep improving my English so that I can stay connected with the wonderful friends I met.

Did studying English with us open any new opportunities for you? What are you doing now?

The time I spent studying in the ELC program gave me the confidence that it’s okay to make mistakes and provided me with many opportunities to speak in English. This experience helped me overcome my fear of speaking English, and I’m sure it will be a great strength for me in the global society. Based on what I learned from the ELC program, I’ve been trying to continue studying English even after returning to Korea.

What's it like living in Victoria?

Living in Victoria was truly beautiful. Not only the scenery of the downtown streets but also the peacefulness of Victoria’s well-preserved natural environment gave me unforgettable experiences. It was especially amazing to see wild animals like deer, peacocks, squirrels, and seals in daily life.

Best advice for new students

Joining the ELC program will give you a truly valuable and special time in your life. At first, living and studying in a foreign country with people who speak a different language may feel a bit scary. But if you take on the challenge, it will not only improve your English skills but also help you grow in many ways. You will also have the chance to make amazing friends from all around the world.
