Jihoon Hong reflects on attending the Intensive English (ELPI) program at UVic, sharing how supportive teachers, a memorable Tofino trip, Canadian kindness, and learning with international classmates helped him gain confidence and prepare for future studies in Canada.

Which ELC program(s) did you attend?

I attended the Intensive English (ELPI) program.

What made your ELC program special?

What made the ELC program special for me was the supportive learning environment and the dedication of the teachers. They didn’t just focus on grammar or tests but really helped us build confidence in real-life communication. I always felt encouraged to speak, make mistakes, and grow at my own pace.

What is the most memorable thing that happened to you as an ELC student?

One of the most memorable experiences for me as an ELC student was a two-day graduation trip to Tofino with my classmates. Spending one night together, we explored nature, shared meals, and used English naturally outside the classroom. That experience brought us closer and helped me realize how much more confident and comfortable I had become using English in real-life situations. It was a meaningful way to celebrate both the end of the program and the friendships we built along the way.

Do you have any favourite memories of Canadian culture?

One of my favorite memories of Canadian culture is how polite and respectful people are in everyday situations. Simple moments, like small talk with strangers or kindness from classmates and host families, left a strong impression on me. It made me feel welcome as an international student.

How did learning with students from other cultures change how you see the world?

Studying with students from many different countries helped me become more open-minded. I learned to see things from different perspectives and gained a deeper understanding of cultural differences. It reminded me that there is no single “right” way to think or live.

Did studying English with us open any new opportunities for you? What are you doing now?

Yes, studying English at the ELC gave me the confidence to plan my future in Canada more seriously. I am now continuing my studies and preparing for the next stage of my academic and professional journey, with the goal of settling in Victoria. Improving my English has helped me communicate more clearly, make informed decisions, and set long-term goals for my life in Canada.

Advice for new students

I would tell them to be open, patient, and not afraid of making mistakes. If you actively participate and trust the process, you will gain much more than just language skills. The ELC is not only about learning English, it’s about growing as a person.

What's Victoria like?

Living in Victoria was calm, safe, and inspiring. The city has beautiful nature, friendly people, and a relaxed atmosphere that made it easy to focus on studying while enjoying daily life. It felt like the perfect place to balance learning and personal growth.
