Which ELC program(s) did you attend?

I attended the Intensive English ELPI program.

What made your ELC program special?

I think my teachers and contents of classes made my ELC program special.  My teachers were always supportive in the class, and they always tried to make my understanding better. Because of this, I was able to try hard to get my English improved. In addition, the content of the class was also great for me.  In the class, I had to have a lot of presentation. At first, I thought it was so hard, but when it comes to the end of terms, I realized those experiences made my ability which is about not only speaking skills, but also the courage to stand in public!

What is the most memorable thing that happened to you as an ELC student?

I think the bake sale was the most memorable thing! I decided to support an organization with my classmates. After that, we prepared some materials for the presentation. It was hard to introduce the charity by my own words, but in the bake sale, many students who listened to my speech came to donate money. I found all the students here cooperative and kind. I could feel the connection.

What was it like living in Victoria?

Living in Victoria was really nice to live for me because I love nature! It was surprising that there were so many deers, squirrels, and rabbits. Both going to places rich in nature and going downtown was easy to enjoy a lot of things. Especially, the Inner Harbour was really beautiful no matter how many times I looked at it.

Do you have any favourite memories of Canadian culture?

I enjoyed pumpkin carving! In my country Japan, there’s no pumpkins like here, so first time I saw these big and orange pumpkins, it was really surprising for me. My host family took me to join pumpkin carvings and I enjoyed doing it. On Halloween night, I explored around my house and got some treats from my neighbours. It was totally the first time to have Halloween. Everything was new to me, but every moment was special for me!

How did learning with students from other cultures change how you see the world?

In my class, there were some students from Korea, Mexico, and Colombia. Each time when we discussed, we talked about our country and culture. They knew about their country well, so I realized the importance of learning my country and culture. Before I came to here, I had an assumption there was a belief that there was a difference in character between countries. However, after that I talked with a lot of friends from another country, I realized that each person had their personality and there was no barrier with them as a person.

Did studying English with us open any new opportunities for you? What are you doing now?

This experience in UVic made me think about my future. I learned that there are many things in the world that I don't know yet, and I thought I want work in another country. Now I'm back in Japan, and I'm working hard to acquire the qualifications for my future. If I had a chance, I want to go back here as a place where I work.

What advice would you give another student who is thinking about taking an ELC program?

If you're considering whether you go or not, that's a proof that you want to go. I was able to get to know the world from a broader perspective. And it made me think about how I live my life. I think it will surely be a precious memory that will change your life. You can meet new friends who would not meet if you hadn’t come here. Get the courage to take the first step!
