Program description

This program gives you the methodological knowledge and French language fluency necessary to be a highly effective teacher in the French Immersion environment.

There are four courses in the program: one fluency course and three methodology courses. Two of the courses are offered on campus in summer session (July), and two are offered online in the fall and spring terms. You can start the program in January or in July: one of the summer courses is a prerequisite to the fall course. Please see the program schedule.

Program audience

The program is open to in-service and pre-service teachers in British Columbia and beyond. All courses are taught in French and their content is based on the BC curriculum.

Program outcomes

This program will:
  • provide a rigorous, accredited training program and certificate to teachers who are native speakers of French, as well as to teachers who are functionally fluent in French.
  • enable teachers to advance their theoretical knowledge and practical skills in teaching in the French Immersion context
  • provide a high degree of both written and oral proficiency to French Immersion teachers, heighten their awareness and knowledge of the necessity to continue to address their own language limitations and provide them with the linguistic, cultural and attitudinal tools to move ahead in their profession
  • provide language assessment and career preparation for practicing teachers interested in teaching in French Immersion

Application information

Admission requirements

Applicants must:

  • be either certified teachers (in-service) or enrolled in a program of teacher education (pre-service);
  • have a high initial level of French language fluency; and

have taken the Test de Français International (TFI), within the last 2 years, with a score of at least 365 for oral skills and 305 for written skills. If test results are older, you may be considered for admission based on proof of continuous practice of French since the test date.

Test de Français International

The Test de Français International is produced by Educational Testing Services (ETS), the agency which also produces other standardized tests such as the TOEFL for English. The TFI is a standardized test widely used in Canada and abroad to demonstrate one’s level of proficiency in French. Here in Victoria, a TFI score certificate is now required for the following purposes:

  • admission to the Professional Specialization Certificate in Teaching French Immersion program
  • pre-screening of applicants in the Greater Victoria School District for teaching positions in French Immersion (possibly followed by an oral interaction test ordered by the District)
  • screening of applicants in the Greater Victoria School District for teaching FSL in secondary schools
  • screening of Education students wishing to be placed in a French Immersion environment for their practicum
  • verification of the French proficiency requirement for applicants to a Secondary Teacher Education program with a French teaching area.

We conduct private TFI tests specifically for entrance into the PSC in Teaching French Immersion program throughout the year at UVic, in October, May and July.

If you cannot attend one of our private tests, you can also be tested in one of the public TFI sessions organized for the general public by ETS Canada. These tests take place each month on the same Saturday at all official testing centres in Canada, including Victoria and Vancouver. To be tested at one of those public sessions, you must register directly with ETS Canada.

For more information on the ETS dates, deadlines to register, location of testing centres and how to register, please visit the ETS website.
