Life in Medieval Cities
COURSE
Course description
In the medieval period, many societies built the foundations of the biggest cities in the world today, or reshaped ancient port and market towns into busy metropolises. The voices of the people who lived and worked in medieval cities speak to us through art and architecture, streets and canals, ports and bridges, art and objects, and written descriptions. Each week, we will focus on a different city—Constantinople, Cairo, Samarkand—and explore its architecture, history and urban life.
