Course description

Each class will introduce important visual themes in Western art history and then apply these ideas to hands-on drawing exercises. We will begin by considering underlying structures and line in late medieval art, before moving towards anatomy and perspective in the renaissance period. Subsequent classes will cover baroque shading techniques, impressionist colour theory, and composition and various approaches to abstraction in modernism. Finally, we will consider some of the ideas currently under discussion in contemporary art.
