Indigenous Literature: A Doorway to Decolonization
COURSE
Course description
This session will focus on using Indigenous literature and its genres to engage in conversations about decolonization. The first part of the workshop will present a brief history of Indigenous publications and will introduce a few authors. The second part of the session will be a hands-on workshop where participants will be invited to work in small groups to envision and create methods to work with Indigenous stories, poetry, fiction and graphic novels to decolonize their classrooms. A list of resources will be provided.
This workshop may appeal more to middle and high school teachers but it can be adapted to younger age groups.
Learning objectives
Participants in the workshops will:
- Learn about the history of Indigenous writers in Canada
- Use Indigenous literature to approach conversations on decolonization, history of injustices towards Indigenous people, and their communities
- Envision and create activities or methods to use literature as a doorway to approach difficult topics in educational contexts
