Course description
This course focuses on the theory and practices to help us build alliances powerful enough to transform systems.
Settler colonialism and capitalism have damaged relationships with land and with each other. As we seek to build strong alliances between Indigenous Peoples and settlers we need to be unlearning white supremacy, hierarchy and dominance, and learning to build trust, reciprocity and accountability.
Learning objectives
Upon completion of the course, you will be able to:
- understand the need for and become familiar with the theories related to the Five Dimensions of Building Trust & Healing Relations:
- Understanding the ongoing harms under settler colonialism
- Actively contributing to helping stop the harm
- Making reparations and returning what was taken
- Building relationships through active allyship and solidarity
- Going forward together towards shared goals
- access tools to cultivate the relational skills needed to heal and build strong relationships including humbleness, active listening, ability to hear criticism, empathy (for self and others), patience, care and endurance
- be familiar with real-life examples and initiatives related to Land Back, Reconciliation, Decolonization and Transformative Allyships and Solidarity
- make commitments to put all this into practice
Format
This course will be comprised of 5 days of in-person study with some additional coursework taking place before and after the scheduled in-person classes.
