Susan Maltby is an objects conservator in private practice in Toronto, Ontario. She established her own conservation consulting firm in 1989 after working for the Canadian Conservation Institute for four years. Susan’s firm offers a variety of services including object treatment, training seminars, collection surveys, advice on collections care and management, and conservation guidelines for exhibits, museums and heritage structures. Over the years, Susan has worked with a variety of museums and collections, and is also involved with architectural conservation and the preservation of historic cemeteries.
She has an undergraduate degree in anthropology (archaeology) from the University of Toronto and a Master of Art Conservation from Queen’s University. Susan has worked on archaeological excavations in Israel, Egypt, Jordan and Cyprus.
As a conservator, Susan is committed to preventive conservation. Throughout her career, she has been involved with training and educating the non-conservator about conservation. She is an adjunct professor in the Museum Studies Program/Faculty of Information at the University of Toronto where she teaches preventive conservation. Susan has taught in the Art Conservation Program at Queen's University and was an instructor at the Campbell Center for Historic Preservation Studies, Mt. Carroll, Illinois. She is a regular columnist for Coin World (“Preserving Collectibles”), and has contributed to Scott Stamp Monthly and Old-House Journal.
