Biography

Val Schaefer is the former academic administrator for the Restoration of Natural Systems program, School of Environmental Studies, UVic. He explores urban ecosystems, urban agriculture, the impact of nature in the city on physical and emotional well-being, and the role of invasive species and ecological memory in creating novel ecosystems. Most of his restoration projects involve environmental stewardship. Val is senior author of Urban Biodiversity: Exploring Natural Habitat and its Value in Cities. He has received the BC Ministry of Environment Award for Environmental Education, the Vancouver Natural History Society Davidson Award for Conservation and several community service awards for environmental stewardship in Metro Vancouver and Greater Victoria.
