The Rise of Central Banks' Digital Currencies: The Case of Europe
Part of:
UVic on the Peninsula
Course description
Digital transformations and the expansion of digital finance have generated intense debates on what ought to be the role of central banks as issuers of digital currencies (CBDCs).
In this lecture, we examine why the European Central Bank and the European national central bank have taken a starring role in what is known as a "retail CBDC" or the digital euro. We'll focus mostly on the European case but will also provide some context about the policies of central banks elsewhere across the globe.
