Modern Border Management: Law of Borders and Cross-Border Laws
Course description
Disputes relating to international borders are common. They range from state-to-state disputes over territorial sovereignty and boundary alignment, to local disagreements over area access and use in the border vicinity. No matter the scale and intensity, border disputes are rarely easy to resolve amongst all relevant parties. This course will explore: the types of border disputes and their origins; the benefits and risks of different options for resolving disputes over borders; and how to minimize friction between borderland communities with ongoing, formal efforts to find a permanent settlement.
Learning objectives
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
- outline the principles of effective boundary-making and border management
- describe the process of boundary-making and its evolution through history
- understand how to manage cross-border relations where international boundaries are uncertain or disputed
