James Bay: History, Architecture and People
COURSE
Course description
James Bay is the oldest residential neighbourhood in British Columbia from the era after settler contact.
Previously, it was home to Lekwungen-speaking peoples and some of their place names and sites of significance will be discussed. In the 1840s, the Hudson’s Bay Company’s Beckley Farm occupied much of James Bay. After the 1858 gold rush, farmlands gave way to new houses, industries, schools and churches.
John Adams will cover a wide range of this history in his talk illustrated by maps, paintings and photographs.
