Personal Pronouns

Introduction

Personal pronouns are used in sentences instead of nouns.

Singular and Plural Uses

Remember to use singular pronouns when referring to singular nouns, as in the examples below.

My name is Richard. I am a teacher.

The man left of the room. He seemed angry about something.

The woman left the room. She seemed angry about something.

Use plural pronouns when referring to plural nouns, as in the following example sentences.

My wife and I were hungry, so we ordered a large meal.

The people were hungry, so they ordered a large meal

Personal Pronouns as Subjects and Objects

Certain personal pronouns are known as subject pronouns. That is, they perform the actions in sentences, as in the examples below.

I went home as soon as the movie ended.

We enjoyed the trip to Mexico very much.

He was late for work because he missed the bus.

She was tired, so she went to be early.

They had a good time at the party.

You are doing a wonderful job.

Certain other personal pronouns are the objects of verbs. That is, they receive the action, as in these examples.

My friends gave me a surprise birthday party.

The policeman gave us a warning.

There is somebody at the door. Please let him/her in.

The players are tired. Let them rest for a few minutes.
